Flash Carbon AOSP Android 4.3 custom ROM for Google Nexus 4

Dromag - Carbon AOSP based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean is now available for the Google Nexus 4 smartphone. Use this tutorial in order to learn how to successfully update your device with this latest custom ROM.

Carbon ROM is based on AOSP Jelly Bean 4.3, AOKP, CyanogenMod and other similar and popular custom ROMs. More info about it can be found at its goo.im web page here or at their G+ profile page here. If you want to flash this new ROM at your first attempt, then you should first take a look at the guidelines listed below:

• this guide works only with the Google Nexus 4 smartphone.
• Don’t attempt to update any other smartphone with the zip files that you find in this article.
• Your Nexus 4 has to be on an unlocked bootloader, it has to be rooted and running a custom Recovery image like the CWM or TWRP ones.
• For the new ROM to install correctly, you will need to apply a factory reset.
• - this will delete all the files that are stored on your system partition, files such as data from installed apps, SMS, Contacts and other similar ones.
• Backup info and data from installed applications using these apps: Titanium Backup (here) or Helium (here) from Google Play.
• SMS, Call Logs info and APN Internet Settings can be saved using the following tools for Android: SMS backup & restore | Call Logs backup & restore | APN Settings Backup & Restore. Root access is required for some of these tools.
• Sync the  Contacts data with your Gmail account, as this will backup all your saved phone numbers to Google’s cloud storage.
• - make sure that after the new ROM is flashed you will use the same Google account as default, so that all files will be restored to your device.
• A NANDROID Backup for your device is required before starting the update. This will set a restore point for your device.
• Enable USB Debugging from Developer Options.
• Make sure that your phone’s battery has enough power left before it switches off completely.
• This is a guide for advanced users, note that we cannot be blamed in case something goes wrong and you lose data or you brick your smartphone in the process.

How to flash Carbon AOSP Android 4.3 Custom ROM for Google Nexus 4:

1. Download the Carbon JB Nightly zip for ‘mako’ device from here.
2. - make sure that you download the latest build available.
3. Download Gapps for Android 4.3 custom ROMs from here.
4. Plug your Nexus 4 to your computer, then move both zip files to your phone’s internal storage.
5. - after you move the files you should unplug the device from PC.
6. Power off your device now completely.
7. Boot the Nexus 4 into Bootloader Mode and then into custom Recovery Mode.
8. - if you don’t know how to boot in Recovery, then use the info listed here.
9. Create a NANDROID Backup of your currently installed ROM using the the CWM / TWRP Recovery Mode:
10. - CWM: select ‘backup and restore’, then save the backup to your phone’s internal SDcard.
11. - TWRP: use the Backup option and confirm the process.
12. Next, factory reset your Nexus 4:
13. - CWM: select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’. Confirm.
14. - TWRP: press Wipe, then Factory Reset. Confirm this process.
15. Install the Carbon AOSP Android 4.3 ROM now:
16. - CWM: select ‘install zip from sdcard’, then ‘choose zip from sdcard’. Find the custom ROM zip file and confirm its installation.
17. - TWRP: press Install, then load all files into TWRP and swipe the blue button in order to start the flash process.
18. When the Carbon AOSP ROM finishes to install all its files, you will need to repeat step 8 and flash the Gapps zip too.
19. After you manage to install the ROM and Gapps files you should return to the main Recovery screen.
20. Reboot your smartphone now.
21. - note that the first boot process might take a while to complete, which is why you should wait until complete.
22. - if the first boot process doesn’t load all the files, then you should power off the device and then repeat the entire tutorial.
23. When the home screen of your Android device appears you should enter your Google Account details.
24. Take control of your device and make sure that you test all its features.
