Samsung to Launch Flexible Smartphone in October

Dromag - Samsung announced officially that their first smartphone with curved display is in the works, but start celebrating yet as it won’t be a global device. Samsung will initially launch it on the South Korean domestic market in order to view the public’s reaction to the new type of smartphone.

Earlier this year, during CES 2013 tech fair, the Korean phone maker revealed a smartphone with a 5.5-inch flexible display, codenamed Samsung Youm (pictured above).

Samsung Youm looked a lot like the company’s smartphones running Bada OS and the flexible touch panel technology was used to effectively expand the screen on the edges of the terminal in order to display notifications.

According to a Samsung representative quoted by Engaget, the upcoming smartphone will use an OLED touch panel, which will not be “completely flexible.” It will be curved inside the handset’s case which will be rigid just like the one of any other similar device.

The rumor mill speculates that the first Samsung curved smartphone will be an upgrade for the Galaxy Note 3 phablet. I remind you that the current Galaxy Note 3 boasts about a 5.7-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, 13 MP camera with 4K video recording support, 3 GB of RAM, 32/64 GB of internal storage (with microSD card slot), LTE, NFC, IR blaster, microUSB 3.0, and all standards of WiFi.

There are currently two Note 3 variants, the I9005 based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC (quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 330 GPU) and the I9000 underpinned by Samsung’s proprietary eight-core Exynos 5 Octa (quad-core 1.9 GHz Cortex A15 + quad-core 1.3 GHz Cortex A7 and Mali T628 GPU). I guess the Korean company will want to use the later processing unit for the curved Galaxy Note 3.
